HISTORY

Benchmark: The Civil War split the nation. It was the most bitter conflict within the United States. The source of the conflict between the North and the South resulted from fundamentally different ways of life. The Civil War began April 12, 1861 when Confederate forces attacked Fort Sumter, a Union military fort.  The war lasted from 1861-1865. The war was triggered by the election of Abraham Lincoln in 1860.  He wanted to end slavery and keep the Union together.
